Last week, I joined the Southern California Chapter in celebrating the “Best” (Building Excellence, Shaping Tomorrow) in Public Works. Individuals and communities were recognized for excellence in many categories, one of those being Creative and Innovative. A winner this year was an iPhone app called “The Works” that was developed in-house by Los Angeles County. The app “provides the public a convenient way to request services or report issues related to graffiti, potholes, illegal dumping, or street sweeping.” When a request is made, it is automatically routed to the responsible business unit for timely resolution. It even tells you who to contact if the request is outside of their jurisdiction. Go to http://www.dpw.lacounty.gov/theworks/ to learn more. What a great way to have public works at your fingertips! I applaud the LA County public works folks as well as all the other award winners for going above and beyond to create safer and better communities.
Is anyone else using smart phone technology to serve their communities?
The one thing the app doesn’t do is provide real-time star sightings. Is there an app for that?
